Are tongues still alive today?

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

It's a Spirit thing you woudn't understand.

Acts 2:11
(both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs-we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"

This effect not easily duplicated in today’s churches. Without the understanding of witnesses own language understanding it is easy for the have counterfeit speaking and it’s one of the reasons some believe it is a gift no longer alive.

Mark 16:17
And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;

What if tongues are a sign of the Holy Spirit?

What if the helped you praise God?

Spiritual Gifts 1 Corinthians 12
1 Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant

7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But eagerly desire the greater gifts.

What are the grater gifts?

1 Corinthians 13:1
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

1 Corinthians 13:8
Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

Why are tongues gone but prophecies and knowledge still active?

1 Corinthians 14:1
[Gifts of Prophecy and Tongues] Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.

1 Corinthians 14:5-6
I would like every one of you to speak in tongues
, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.

Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?

Spiritual gift ranking prophesy, higher than Speaking in tongues unless they can interpret. We can determine that it is important that people gifted in speaking in tongues ask God for the gift of interpretation. That way they not only edify themselves but others as well.

1 Corinthians 14:14
For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.

You might ask yourself why I would want my mind to be unfruitful. The easiest explanation is that speaking in tongues is your restart button. Most of your emotional problems rest in the mind. In computer terms speaking in tongues gets all the upgrades to you operating system from the manufacturer.

1 Corinthians 14:18
I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.

Paul states that he not only speaks them but more than anybody.

1 Corinthians 14:21
In the Law it is written: "Through men of strange tongues and through the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to me," says the Lord.

1 Corinthians 14:22-23
Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers.

So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues and some who do not understand or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?

We do have to be careful to not abuse the gift, tongues are a way to self edify, for our soul to go in direct communication with God. If not done properly or under the guidance and anointing of the Holy Spirit it might be a stumbling block to new and unbelievers.

1 Corinthians 14:39
Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.

If you still believe that tongues are no longer alive ask God why he write this warning in our Bible.
